Handmade Resin Buttons Now Available

As many of you would know I have been making my own resin buttons for a little over a year now. I often receive many questions about purchasing my buttons and am excited to announce that I now have them available to purchase through my Etsy store.

The photos show a selection of buttons that are currently available. I will be adding more weekly and will have different colours available very soon. The large buttons are available in set of 4 for $7AUD ($1.75 per button) and the small buttons are available in sets of 6 for $6AUD ($1 per button).

My resin buttons are ideal for jewellery, card making, scrapbooking and embellishments.

New Designs for 2012

With January being a rather quiet month for me I have had heaps of time to finally work on some new pieces. Most of these have been in my head and on paper for at least 4 months! I am working on a number of new necklace designs evolving my style and moving in new and exciting directions. I am also trying to ensure my brand differs from other button jewellery creators. Here is my latest button necklace creation.

Almost a year ago a started creating resin coasters for my home wares range. These included buttons, coffee beans, 100's & 1000's and more! I am now developing new items to add to and expand this range. These include resin platters, decorative ornaments or paper weights and mirrors.

Here is my latest in new creations for 2012, introducing the Ribbon Button Necklace. Designed with simplicity and everyday wear in mind it is a comfortable style which is adjustable in length. You can wear it long or short choker style, whichever way suits you best.

I have had some time to think over the Christmas and New Year break and am making some big changes this year.....

Firstly I have decided to simplify. I have been working on some new style button necklaces and am reflecting on older designs from past years for inspiration.

Secondly I will be making a lot less of my signature Statement Button Necklace style this year. I have decided to do this as I am trying to keep my jewellery unique and different to other button jewellery creators.

And thirdly I will be introducing more found objects into my jewellery and other mediums. Don't worry I will still be working with buttons as well.

On Sunday I attended my very first Mummy Tree Market as a stall holder. It was a very hot and steamy day in Brisbane and that didn't stop the crowds. New Design - Large Resin Cabochon Rings

The latest creations to come out of the Kellie Christie studio are Large Resin Cabochon Rings. The cabochons are hand made using resin and embedding objects such as buttons, feathers and resin shards. Each cabochon is finished with an adjustable silver plated ring base. These rings will be available to purchase at my October market and online soon.

Pencil Jewellery

Over the years I have occasionally come across jewellery made using the humble colouring pencil. The very first time I saw anything made with colouring pencils was at the QUT Art Gallery many years ago. I can't even remember the artist's name but she had created the most amazing sculptures using thousands maybe even hundreds of thousands of colouring pencils all glued together and then carved into organic forms. As you all know I love creating unique and interesting jewellery using found objects and really wanted to have a go at creating something with pencils.

This is my very first piece the Rainbow Pencil Necklace. I have used jumbo colouring pencils and now the ideas are flowing with ways to incorporate buttons with the pencils and even make buttons from the pencils. Stay tuned for more creations....

It has been a long time in the making but I am pleased to share with you some of my new designs from the Animal Crackers Series. I have added a few new pieces including a cat and a dachshund and this time I have had them made from coloured acrylic and bamboo. This is set to be a huge event with the street closed off to traffic and plenty of market stalls, food and live entertainment all day long. Twilight Market Wrap

The Brisstyle Indie Twilight Markets were on Friday night in the city. With some unpredictable weather we put the wet weather contingency plan in to action and set up on the Deck above Groove Train Restaurant in King George Square. The Deck turned out to be a fantastic spot for a market with great lighting and atmosphere with roving jazz musicians and lots of market stalls.

I had a great night with Bel from Sybella, we definitely made the most of a smaller space, squeezing in as much of our stock as we could and had a lot of laughs along the way. I would like to thanks the Brisstyle committee for their hard work behind the scenes to make this market the best handmade market in Brisbane! Experiments in Resin

I have been having a lot of fun lately branching out and trying new ideas and techniques with resin. Here are some of my successful experiments that you can expect to see at the Brisstyle Indie Twilight market on Friday April 29th.

The coloured pieces in these bangles are resin pieces that I have spilled or cut off other resin creations. What do you think of this effect? I love it! I have also made another that has a few random coloured buttons added in too. These are currently waiting to be sanded and polished as you can see by the rough edge on the bottom.

I only have the one of these at the moment. I have embedded red feathers in clear resin to create this chunky bangle. I am thinking about adding a slight translucent colour to the resin for these to match the colour of the feathers.

This bangle is from my glitter-licious series. I have made it using layers of fast curing resin with dyes and lots of glitter. I will definitely be making more of these bangles and will have some available at my next markets. What colour combinations would you like to see??? I am thinking purple, yellow and maybe orange or blue.

My first market for April was on Saturday at The Handmade Expo. It was a wonderful day with lots of chats to many lovely customers and fellow stall holders. As it was the start of the Easter holidays it was a little on the quite side for me but still a great day! Thanks to Bel my stall buddy and lovely creative mind behind Sybella.

This week I have been busy with lots of market preparations and of course some resin creating. I found some awesome ice cube trays this week in the shape of guns and robots!! I thought these would be great for the guys. I am planning on making key rings and magnets and also some pendants for the girls. This week I have been making a big effort to get loads of sanding done. Each day I have sat down to a number of bangles and rings while my youngest has had his sleep. This is today's pile which isn't finished but all of the major sanding is now done.

I also made a new bangle mold last night which is super chunky. It took 100ml of resin!! Definitely a statement piece.

Last night I got some bangle molds made. I have a number of vintage bangles sitting around my studio that I have purchased lately intending to create molds and finally got a few done last night. I also made a mold of a tiger head which I will be using to create resin pendants. I think that mold making is just as addictive as resin casting, I guess it is the excitement of having a new design to start using.

Bangles all ready to be cast in pinkysil. Shot glasses and take away containers do come in handy sometimes.

Mixing the pinkysil, it actually looks like delicious pink icing.

SANDING & POLISHING ARGH! I got through quite a few bangles yesterday but still have about 5 or so to finish off today. Sanding and polishing is definitely not my favourite part of working with resin.

I also made a new mould for two pendants and did a test pour. White was not the best colour for these pieces and I have decided to make the skull a different colour so that it stands out more against the background.

My husband bought it for me from Harvey Norman about 2 years ago now and it has been fantastic! I definitely recommend getting one if you are thinking about it.

This week has been busy..... I had a huge clean out of the studio, met up with fellow Brisstyle members to celebrate our 3rd birthday and have also been getting organised for this weekends Handmade Expo market.

Today's feature designer is Etsy artisan Genevieve Williamson. Genevieve is a polymer clay artist whose label is Jibby and Juna. She describes her work as "visual conversation. A natural cross pollination occurs and my creative process is rarely a straight line from concept to completion." I love the colours and textures created in each piece and also the organic shapes. Her pieces are so unique and definitely different to most polymer clay jewellery that I have seen.

Today I have been sanding and polishing resin rings. I have a LOT of pieces sitting, waiting for me to muster up the motivation to finish them off. The sanding really is NOT my favourite part of the resin jewellery making process.

This is the end result. Six rings sanded and polished!! I also worked out a sneaky way to make the process a little faster YAYSIES!

What to do with a Copycat

I read this interesting article on Etsy today all about the legalities of dealing with Copycat's and your rights. Unfortunately so many people in the creative community have to deal with this on a regular basis and I myself have been directly affected by a copycat. It makes me angry to know that there are people out there blatantly ripping off our ideas and creations and making money from our hard work, product research and unique creations!

You can view the article HERE and I definitely suggest you go and have a read. There is a lot of information about steps that you can take to prove that your work is your own through keeping journals of your ideas, concepts and works in progress. They also suggest the importance of taking screen shots of a copy cat's work before you approach them about it, as often they will delete the image once you have contacted them about it.

Another piece of advice stated in the article is "If you are selling products that could easily be reproduced because of the materials or techniques you use, try learning new ways to create products that are more original and not so easily reproduced for both peace of mind and better business success." This is something that I have been trying to do as I have found more and more people creating button jewellery over the past couple of years. I like to keep my pieces unique and hope that my style and use of my own hand cast resin buttons sets them apart from others.

I have had a few custom orders this week and have finally finished them so I got some resin play time in last night. These bangles are from molds that I have made and I had a play with the resin that has a very fast curing time.

I also made some derby skates!! How cool are these? I am planning on making some pendants and possibly big buttons with these.

Resin Workshop

On Saturday evening I attended a resin workshop at Barnes with the very talented Bronwyn. It was a fantastic night with a lot of laughs and fun. I learned a few new colour mixing techniques that I will be playing with in my resin pieces and also had the opportunity to work with a new resin. This resin is different then what I am used to as the curing time is VERY FAST! You only have about 2 minutes to work with it before it starts to cure! The resin that I use takes about 24 to 48 hours to cure so I have a lot more time to mix colours and add glitter and other fun things. It would be fantastic if Bronwyn started a workshop for advanced resin techniques *hint hint*.

I have been busy with market preperations this week and of course making a few new last minute pieces. I have had a little bit of time to play with resin and made this bangle and ring. These are from new molds that I made over the weekend. the bangle that I used for the mold is a faux bakelite bangle that I have had for years. I am so happy with how it has turned out and will definitely be making more in a variety of colours.

I have also made this resin cupcake! I will be making more of these in a variety of colours and they will be turned in to very chunky rings! Not for the faint hearted.

To keep my jewellery unique I have been sourcing more and more handmade buttons from other talented crafters overseas and also making my own resin and laser etched buttons. Throughout the month of January I pledged a number of items to the Brisstyle Handmade Ark Appeal. Brisstyle is a Etsy Street Team of crafters and designers who hold markets regularly in Brisbane. The "Handmade Ark" Appeal was set up to support those who have been devastated by the terrible floods in Queensland and all profits from items sold are donated to the Premiers Flood Relief Appeal. I donated a number of items from my Etsy Store and also donated 20% of all sales made from January 13th to January 31st.

I am very pleased to announced that I donated $126.60 and would like to thank all of those who supported this cause. I am very excited to share with you a selection from my new range of wood cuts for 2011. They are my own designs which I have had laser cut and have created pendants, necklaces and brooches. What is the inspiration behind your business name?
This was such a difficult decision to make. In the end I chose to use my name because I thought I could expand into other artistic areas if I wanted to at any time and keep it all under the same umbrella so to speak. It was also a cop out, I couldn’t for the life of me think of anything at the time.

How long have you been in business and how did you get started?
I started off at the markets in August 2010 and tentatively put a few pieces on Etsy at the same time. I took a hiatus on Etsy until December as I was improving my techniques but basically I needed to make money and since no one else was doing the same thing I thought there would be an opportunity in it. I found out that I actually loved the whole process and so I am even more committed to what I do.

Is this your full time job? If no, what is your full time job?

This is a full-time job for me. Ironically I have worked longer hours doing this than I did in any other job but I love it and it has been a blessing as far as being home for my daughter is concerned.

Who/ what is your inspiration behind your art/craft?
I have to give credit to Stacey Mincher who also uses the teeth of zippers to create her own wonderful pieces (Stacey has an Etsy shop under her name). I didn’t follow her technique but I liked the idea of using the zippers so with some family help I figured out a technique that gave me the flexibility I wanted in my designs.

Which best applies to you – Indie, Eco, Art, Design, Handmade?
I think I am a bit of everything and would happily land in any of the mentioned categories. At heart though I would say I am an artist since I come from a painting background.

How do you strive to keep your art/craft unique?
I think that because I have developed my own particular way of making my pieces there is a natural evolution that occurs as I try to perfect my techniques. It also helps to come in to something that hasn’t been widely explored yet so influences tend to come less from others doing similar work and more from what you see around you. The area I work in is so new I am still finding out what can and can’t be done and that in itself keeps it unique.

Share your favourite item that you currently sell/ stock in your online store.
My favorite right now would have to be a pair of earrings I just made that have a circle motif. It’s not a complex design but I like the fact that they are a little quirky because the circles aren’t placed directly under each other and again, it’s something I haven’t done before.

Describe your creative process. Eg. Do you take time planning out exactly what you will make or do you experiment and see what happens?
I’ve never been good at planning creative projects. I found my best paintings were always ones that evolved naturally and I think the same holds true for my jewelry pieces. It’s the natural evolution of the piece that gives me joy in what I do.

What are your future plans/dreams for your business?
My short-term plan is to develop my online presence so that my shop becomes a profitable business. Once I have established that goal I will also work on creating artwork, primarily using zippers still since I enjoy the challenge. Since my mind goes in a million directions I see so much that I want to do, I need my business to be the anchor for everything.

What advice would you offer other creative people who are just starting their own business?
It really helps to have people around you who believe in what you do and who support you every step of the way. I find it hard to be disciplined about the business side of it but I know it’s essential so I guess getting that in order early on is very important. Have a plan and just keep at it.

Can you recommend any favourite blogs, websites or magazines?
I’m afraid I am so new to all of this that I am only just starting to explore blogs. As for print media, I know there are some gorgeous art magazines out there but I don’t dare pick them up for fear of temptation.

Yesterday I took full advantage of having my hubby home before we headed out to an Australia Day BBQ and had some resin play! I experimented with marbling two different coloured resins and have made some strawberries and cream buttons! I can't wait to pull them out of the molds and see how they look!

Talented Tuesday - Triian

A Little Something Just for Me

I know of many creative people who never ever make an item just for themselves, we always seem to keep the dodgy or not quite right pieces for ourselves and prefer to sell our creations and make maybe a little bit of money. I sat down the other night and made myself a necklace just for me and just because I can. I used a number of my new resin buttons so this piece is definitely unique.

I wore it out to the shops on Friday and received so many awesome comments about it, I even handed out a few business cards! I will be listing more of my handmade resin buttons on etsy very soon, I just need to finish cleaning them up tonight and then the photographing and listing will begin. I am donating 20% from each sale made on Etsy to the Premier's Flood Relief Appeal until January 31st so get behind Queensland and help support those affected by the floods.

Feature Friday - whizzbangle

Today's Feature Friday Designer is Bronwen Jones from whizzbangle. I first got in touch with Bronwen via the fabulous Etsy where I purchased one of her fantastic resin bangles and soon discovered that she was the proud owner of one of my button necklaces! Small world! We have since become friends and more recently Bronwen has been helping me with resin tips.

What is the inspiration behind your business name?
I am an editor, and I remember looking up various resin and bangle related words in the Macquarie Dictionary. ‘Whizzbang’ came up defined as “one that is conspicuously successful, or skilful”, and that sounded like something I wanted to be. And so whizzbangle was born, and I spell it with a lower case w, a la george and silverchair.

How long have you been in business and how did you get started?
I had an abdominal hernia operation in Feb 2009 and while languishing in hospital (50 staples, so it was for a week) I saw them make resin bangles on Better Homes and Gardens, so I looked up a course in Brisbane and did it in March 2009. Then I was ridiculously prolific and made some that don’t even fit me… so I thought I’d better sell some, or make friends with a thin-wristed octopus. I started my etsy store in August 2009. Kellie Christie was my first customer in September 2009 (thanks Kellie!).

Is this your full time job? If no, what is your full time job?
This is my creative outlet, my hobby. By day I work part-time as an ecologist for the state government, and write policy for a program that provides financial support for landholders to protect high value conservation areas on private land. Yep, it is as dry as it sounds, but we are ensuring that people who have protected their land have support to do so. And then I come home to my two girls, lovely husband and resin in the evenings.

Who/ what is your inspiration behind your art/craft?
I remembered two bangles that I bought in London in 1989. Nothing outstanding, but I remember that I wore them like old slippers on my left hand for years. I am quite particular about the colours and patterns that I wear - I like what I like. So I wanted to make a few favourites that I felt were really ‘me’. Then I wanted other people to have a similar experience – a whizzbangle that they could slip on with jeans on a rainy day or dress up a LBD, one that was so comfortable, but FABULOUS!

And I guess resin is a lovely thing to work with, so that inspires me too. If you feel a plastic bangle made in a factory and then a handmade resin one, there is a real ‘life’ and warmth to the resin. And the simple act of mixing two liquids to make a solid is pretty magic too.

How do you strive to keep your art/craft unique?
I think that the process of creating is so important to me that I am not interested in copying. I have actually been surprised at how much I need the creative element in my life to keep me on an even keel. As I have added more job titles to my life (wife, mother, artist) I find having a creative process that extends from my own thoughts and imagination that then flows to a hands-on experience and finally a finished product is really important.

Share your favourite item that you currently sell/ stock in your online store.
The coffee bean pendant is a bit of a favourite at the moment. I tried a new resin, and found that it was perfect for embedding. Coffee beans were first on the list, and when they worked that lead to “oooh, what glittery things will I try next?” and that lead to the ornaments (which I guess are my second choice).

Describe your creative process. Eg. Do you take time planning out exactly what you will make or do you experiment and see what happens?
With two young girls, one at school, and work and family and friends, I *think* about resin more than I actually *do* sometimes. But the thinking helps, and then I have bursts of really productive times. I have tried to take time to plan exactly (such as must make blue on Tuesday), but it just doesn’t work for me. I experiment and make what I feel like at the time (its Tuesday, oooh look at that RED).

What are your future plans/dreams for your business?
I have really enjoyed discovering other handmade people in Brisbane, and how much you have in common with people balancing families and a desire to make something unique. So I would like to join BrisStyle this year and learn a bit from people a bit further along the handmade journey. I hope whizzbangle’s product range will expand from bangles to giftware and ornaments, perhaps even bonbonniere, all involving resin in some way.

What advice would you offer other creative people who are just starting their own business?
I feel like I am still starting too: enjoy what you do, ask for help - there are plenty of people who are willing to share tips and tricks if only you’d ask, enjoy what you do (yes, important enough to be mentioned twice).

Can you recommend any favourite blogs, websites or magazines?
To be honest, I am on the computer very quickly after coming home from local markets, business cards in hand, and really enjoy tracing the path and connections, such as between BrisStylers, or a local stockist. I follow a few blogs, but etsy and facebook are my main sources.

My Creative Space & 300th Post Giveaway.

RESIN!!!! This is my new found love!! I have been wanting to work with resin since I first discovered Dinosaur Designs over 12 years ago. At the beginning of 2010 I made my first silicone molds of buttons with the intention of making resin buttons however hadn't actually done it until now.

I have many different varieties and styles available and have started selling my resin buttons in my Etsy Store. I have been working with glitter and mica powder for a pearly/ metallic effect and have also been having heaps of fun with cake sprinkles or 100's and 1000's. My buttons are completely unique to the Kellie Christie label and are all handmade by me.
